Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a speech writer. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website which features video and posts on the representations of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit site for education that investigates female representations in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they appear in popular media. Furthermore she has a mission to increase awareness about online harassment targeted at women, and other the marginalized communities of people. With a master's in political and social thought at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaking engagement and has given talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. At a young age, Sarkeesian was fascinated with gender issues as well as feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to start an internet-based series on the role of gender in games and was then the victim of an online campaign to harass her. The attack did not stop her, but instead strengthened her resolve as an activist for women in media. Her notable contributions to the field of feminist have been recognized by numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women in pop cultural stories.
